Provide care under the direction of the Lead RN supervisor services to children of the Baltimore City Public School. The School Health RN and/or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who provide general healthcare services at a school’s health care suite. SHNs are not assigned exclusively to specified students for specialized health care. 

-Must demonstrate competency in providing care for pediatric age patients prior to placement in a school.

-The health suite nurse is responsible for reviewing medication and treatment orders for all enrolled students, including those eligible for PDN services. 

-The health suite nurse reviews the health care orders from the Health Care Provider (HCP), completes the Nursing Appraisal and Assessment, and prepares the Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP) and the School Emergency Medical Plan.

-The school nurse will inform the PDN of any changes to the IHCP, medications, treatments, or equipment and supplies as soon as they are received. Should the parent/guardian give medical orders to the PDN, the PDN shall immediately give the orders to the health care suite.

-The school health nurse must have working knowledge of:

-the nursing process, current health issues and trends,

-the pathophysiology and nursing management of common acute and chronic health conditions for the school-aged population, and the use of tools, instruments, and equipment used in nursing.

-The school health nurse must have the ability to meet the nursing needs of the school through: 

-tracking and measuring the health care requirements of the students; and the laws surrounding community health nursing.

The school health nurse need to have the ability to form positive professional relationships with school staff and administrators, as well as students and their families, and demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills and be competent in nursing documentation. 

Duties and responsibilities of SHN (school health nurses)

-Assist the principal or designee in the development of the school’s Emergency medical Plan

-Provide emergency care services, such as CPR and First Aid, as needed.

-Perform skilled nursing tasks, including but not limited to: 

-care of the diabetic student: blood glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting, insulin administration

-clean, intermittent catheterization,

-enteral feedings

-care of the student with a tracheostomy, and other care needs as described by the student’s IHCP

-Prepare clear, complete, concise and accurate documentation of care on approved forms according to City Schools policies and procedures.

-Serve as an educator and resource for healthcare issues for all school personnel, students, and families.

-Function as the student’s healthcare advocate at all times, including during 504 Plan, IEP, and SST meetings. As part of the team, the RN or the Supervising Nurse, will develop health analogous goals for identified students following City Schools’ procedures.

-Evaluate cumulative health data.

-Develop IHCPs for designated students with special healthcare needs (RNs only).

-Provide necessary information to teachers and support personnel regarding the IHCPs for designated students according to FERPA guidelines

-Coordinate the onsite provision of health care with other providers and participate in follow-up care.

-Serve as the conduit for health-related information for the family, the student, the outside service providers, and the school.

-Coordinate all health suite activity. 

-Develop and implement health promotion strategies to encourage greater immunization compliance related to communicable diseases.

-SHNs will view these guidelines and sign the City Schools School Health Nurse Attestation Form. SHNs may discuss questions/concerns with the agency, OHHS, and the principal or administrative designee, as needed.

Job Summary: This position works collaboratively with the SJCS-DC management team to
provide and/or integrate optimal health care and safety into programs and activities for
individuals served in compliance with licensure and other regulatory standards. The nursing
process is used to train, assess, make recommendations about and evaluate care of assigned
individuals.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides maintenance of monthly medical notes, nursing assessments and other
    documentation related to medication use, general health status, and emergency
    procedures for assigned caseload.
  • Consults with physicians, pharmacies and other medical personnel on individual needs
    and relays necessary treatment information to staff to ensure follow-up on such needs.
  • Conducts monthly observations of individuals identified with acute/significant medical
    needs and follows for Medical Services review, providing documentation as
    applicable/required.
  • Provides consultation and practical advice to management and staff regarding routine

  • Provides state approved Medication Administration training for staff as required by DC

Definition

Under direct supervision of the classroom teacher, the incumbent provides one-to-one support to an assigned student and assists the teacher in providing a learning environment which improves and develops the student’s social, communication and intellectual skills. Duties of this position 

include working with children individually and in group settings, providing developmentally appropriate instruction to the student, providing general support for other students, and performing other duties as assigned. The incumbent is responsible for accompanying the assigned student to both scheduled and unscheduled activities throughout the day such as lunch, restroom breaks, therapy sessions, and off-campus activities, and assisting the student in performing tasks associated with those activities. Such assistance may require the incumbent to lift and position physically disabled individuals. The incumbent is also responsible for meeting the student in the morning at the bus or other means of transportation and for delivering the student at the end of the school day to their transport home. An important aspect of the job is gaining knowledge of and implementing the assigned student’s Individual Education Plan goals and objectives as well as data collection and documentation of progress.

This position is classified as non-exempt and in accordance with the Federal regulations is eligible for overtime pay for hours worked in excess of forty (40) hours per week. Note: Overtime must be pre-approved and time off from work either paid or unpaid is not considered in determining  hours worked in a week.

Successful performance on the job requires following safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury to self or students, school dress standards, proper attendance and leave policies and compliance with other policies set forth in the Employee Handbook. Creativity, initiative and effective problem solving is also important to the success of the incumbent.

Examples of Essential Functions

Assists assigned student with physical care, feeding, medication, mobility or other skills as designated by the teacher or therapist. 

Reinforces skills introduced by the teacher and provides instruction to student as prescribed by the teacher; may utilize games, stories or other construction activities to enhance learning skills.

Assists student with gross motor activities such as grasping, holding objects, posture, crawling, and walking. Ability to lift and position physically disabled individuals may be required. 

Reports incidents to teachers and administration immediately; if the event involved the student’s safety, a written incident report is completed.

Actively participates in the school swimming program, which includes wearing appropriate swimwear and assisting the assigned student while in the water.

Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes. Helps student master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods 

and community-based instruction. The ability to keep up with running children and or to lift or assist with lifting students is essential to perform this task.

Attends weekly team meetings; participates in theme planning and shares ideas for activities.

Attends weekly and special staff meetings and assumes responsibility for the verbal and written information provided at such meetings.

Attends required evening meetings outside the school day including Back-to-School Night and Mid-Year Parent Conferences.

Completes assigned paperwork, collects data and updates student(s) portfolios as directed by the teacher.

The essential functions of this position as described herein require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, kneeling, crouching, crawling and brisk walking, and which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (45 lbs.). 

Most tasks require oral communication, visual and hearing perception, and the ability to get around the classrooms, cafeteria, gym, campus, etc. 

Participates as a Committee Member on at least one School Committee. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work, and effectively attend to the needs of a student with intellectual disabilities 

Ability to work with individuals and small groups of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all employees.

Ability to prepare and maintain required program records.

Ability to assist supervising instructional staff in the preparation and/or organization of materials.

Successful completion of the required training courses within a specified period of time Tuberculosis screening to assure no significant risk to the health and safety of others. Successfully passing a criminal background investigation and pre-employment and random drug screenings.

the ParaPro assessment test administered by the Educational Training Service (ETS).
