School Health Suite-Registered Nurses (RN)

- Provide care under the direction of the Lead RN supervisor services to children of the Baltimore City Public School. The School Health RN and/or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who provide general healthcare services at a school’s health care suite. SHNs are not assigned exclusively to specified students for specialized health care.
- Must demonstrate competency in providing care for pediatric age patients prior to placement in a school.
- The health suite nurse is responsible for reviewing medication and treatment orders for all enrolled students, including those eligible for PDN services.
- The health suite nurse reviews the health care orders from the Health Care Provider (HCP), completes the Nursing Appraisal and Assessment, and prepares the Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP) and the School Emergency Medical Plan.
- The school nurse will inform the PDN of any changes to the IHCP, medications, treatments, or equipment and supplies as soon as they are received. Should the parent/guardian give medical orders to the PDN, the PDN shall immediately give the orders to the health care suite.
- The school health nurse must have working knowledge of:
- the nursing process, current health issues, and trends,
- the pathophysiology and nursing management of common acute and chronic health conditions for the school-aged population, and the use of tools, instruments, and equipment used in nursing.
- The school health nurse must have the ability to meet the nursing needs of the school through:
- tracking and measuring the health care requirements of the students; and the laws surrounding community health nursing.
- The school health nurse need to have the ability to form positive professional relationships with school staff and administrators, as well as students and their families, and demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills and be competent in nursing documentation.
- Duties and responsibilities of SHN (school health nurses)
- Assist the principal or designee in the development of the school’s Emergency medical Plan
- Provide emergency care services, such as CPR and First Aid, as needed.
- Perform skilled nursing tasks, including but not limited to:
- care of the diabetic student: blood glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting, insulin administration
- clean, intermittent catheterization,
- enteral feedings
- care of the student with a tracheostomy, and other care needs as described by the student’s IHCP
- Prepare clear, complete, concise and accurate documentation of care on approved forms according to City Schools policies and procedures.
- Serve as an educator and resource for healthcare issues for all school personnel, students, and families.
- Function as the student’s healthcare advocate at all times, including during 504 Plan, IEP, and SST meetings. As part of the team, the RN or the Supervising Nurse, will develop health analogous goals for identified students following City Schools’ procedures.
- Evaluate cumulative health data.
- Develop IHCPs for designated students with special healthcare needs (RNs only).
- Provide necessary information to teachers and support personnel regarding the IHCPs for designated students according to FERPA guidelines
- Coordinate the onsite provision of health care with other providers and participate in follow-up care.
- Serve as the conduit for health-related information for the family, the student, the outside service providers, and the school.
- Coordinate all health suite activity.
- Develop and implement health promotion strategies to encourage greater immunization compliance related to communicable diseases.
- SHNs will view these guidelines and sign the City Schools School Health Nurse Attestation Form. SHNs may discuss questions/concerns with the agency, OHHS, and the principal or administrative designee, as needed.

Job Summary: This position works collaboratively with the SJCS-DC management team to
provide and/or integrate optimal health care and safety into programs and activities for
individuals served in compliance with licensure and other regulatory standards. The nursing
process is used to train, assess, make recommendations about and evaluate care of assigned
individuals.
Essential Functions:
- Provides maintenance of monthly medical notes, nursing assessments and other
documentation related to medication use, general health status, and emergency
procedures for assigned caseload. - Consults with physicians, pharmacies and other medical personnel on individual needs
and relays necessary treatment information to staff to ensure follow-up on such needs. - Conducts monthly observations of individuals identified with acute/significant medical
needs and follows for Medical Services review, providing documentation as
applicable/required. - Provides consultation and practical advice to management and staff regarding routine
medical issues and concerns. - Provides state approved Medication Administration training for staff as required by DC
state law. - Assesses staff needs regarding medication administration protocols and develops
programs to minimize staff medication errors. - Assists management in evaluating staff compliance with DC State medication
management regulations according to physician’s instruction and state law. - Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Definition
Under the direct supervision of the School Nurse Lead, the incumbent is responsible for providing nursing care and health services to students and staff as needed. Employees in this classification are responsible for addressing medical emergencies, assessing circumstances and conditions, and resolving such according to established procedures and protocols. Important aspects of the job include ensuring that all student medical and medication records are documented accurately and timely, and providing various medical/medication in-service training to staff. It is important to note that while providing medical or medication services, the nurse is responsible for the supervision of a student(s), which may require the ability to keep up with a running student and/or to lift or assist with lifting the student. This is essential to perform this task.
In accordance with the federal wage-hour laws, this is a salaried position and is not subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA) minimum wage and overtime pay requirements.
Other Performance Measures:
Successful performance on the job requires following safety guidelines and policies to reduce accidents or injuries to self or students, adhering to school dress standards, proper attendance, leave policies, and compliance with other policies set forth in the Employee Handbook. Creativity, initiative, and effective problem-solving are also important to the success of the incumbent. Responsibilities include attending and participating in weekly team, staff, and development meetings; reading and accepting responsibility for weekly staff notes and all policies and procedures; completing all paperwork accurately and timely; performing bus duty detail as assigned; supporting the overall school mission through volunteer opportunities, and contributing to the smooth operation of the school day.
Examples of Essential Functions
- Administer student medications daily, and update and maintain accurate medical and medication records.
- Obtain and maintain required DCPS health forms such as immunization records, physical and dental exams, etc.
- Perform and document intake interviews with new and potential students.
- Evaluate and create emergency care plans as needed for students with health concerns.
- Obtain signed doctor’s orders for medication and/or contact doctors regarding student medications or other concerns as needed.
- Maintain an up-to-date record of medications taken by students in school and at home.
- Maintain a log of any student illnesses, injuries, treatments, and results.
- Contact parents/guardians regarding student medical issues, and log each parent contact.
- Advise school administrators of possible medical emergencies.
- Train teachers and classroom staff in the proper administration of medications and in medical procedures such as suctioning, tube feeding (NG or G tubes), and administering medications through tubes.
- Report immediately any suspected physical/sexual abuse of a student to the School Principal and/or Assistant Principal and Social Workers.
- Maintain and ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and security of student information and records.
- Serve as a health education resource to students and staff.
- Order necessary medical equipment and supplies to accommodate student needs.
- Maintain a record log of medical training provided to staff.
- Ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and brisk walking, and which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (45 lbs.).
- Ability to lift and position physically disabled individuals may be required.
- Most tasks require oral communication, visual and hearing perception, and the ability to move around the classrooms, cafeteria, gym, campus, etc.
- The ability to keep up with running children and/or to lift or assist with lifting students is essential.
